Why Your Pet Deserves a Proper Bed — And How to Choose the Right One

My neighbour's dog sleeps on a memory foam mattress. A human-sized one. With a fitted sheet.

I'm not saying that's the right call, but I understand how it happens. You start with a cheap basket from a supermarket, the dog ignores it, and six months later you've gone down a rabbit hole at midnight ordering something that probably cost more than your first bed did.

The thing is, getting a decent pet bed doesn't have to be that complicated. But there are a few things worth knowing before you buy because a lot of the options out there look great and fall apart within weeks, and your pet ends up back on the sofa anyway.

First, why bother with a dedicated bed at all?

Partly furniture preservation, yes. But the more interesting reason is sleep quality. Dogs sleep 12 to 14 hours a day. Cats closer to 16. That's not them being lazy that's just how their bodies work. And when an animal is spending that much of its life lying down, the surface they're on genuinely matters.

You notice it most with older dogs. A dog that's been sleeping on hard floors for years starts to move differently slower to get up, stiff in the mornings, sometimes restless at night. A lot of people assume that's just ageing. Sometimes it is. But sometimes it's fixable, and a decent orthopedic bed is where you start.

So what actually separates a good pet bed from a bad one?

Honestly, it comes down to the filling not the cover, not the shape, not whether it matches your sofa. The inside is what matters.

Most cheap beds use loose polyester stuffing. It looks fine in the shop. Within a month of regular use it's migrated to the corners and your dog is essentially sleeping on a fabric-covered floor. What you want is either a proper foam core (dense, not the squishy kind that bounces back too fast) or a mix of materials that holds its shape. Same logic you'd apply to buying a mattress for yourself, really.

After that, size. People consistently buy too small. For dogs especially they curl up when you're watching, then sprawl completely flat once they're actually asleep. Measure nose to tail when your dog is lying down, then add a bit on each side. Give them actual room.

Cover fabric matters for one reason: you need to wash it. Frequently. Pet beds that don't have a removable zip-off cover are going to become a problem within a few weeks. You want something you can throw in the machine without it losing shape or pilling to death.

One last thing that gets overlooked: where you're actually putting it. A raised bolster nest looks beautiful in a cosy bedroom. It can look a bit awkward in the middle of a modern open-plan living room. Colour, style, size relative to the space these things are worth a five-second thought before you click buy.

The nest vs. flat question

If you've spent any time looking at pet beds you'll have noticed they fall into two rough categories the raised nest style with bolstered sides, and the flat orthopedic mat.

For most small-to-medium dogs and cats that curl up when sleeping, the nest style wins. The raised edges give them something to press against, something to rest their chin on. It feels enclosed, which a lot of animals genuinely prefer. There's a reason dogs sleep pushed against walls or wedged under furniture they like the sense of containment.

Larger breeds and older dogs, particularly any with joint issues, tend to do better on flat orthopedic options. Easier to get on and off, even surface, proper support. If your vet's ever mentioned arthritis or hip dysplasia, go flat.

Cats will do whatever they want regardless of what you buy. That's not useful advice, but it's accurate. If you're buying for a cat, get something that gives them options a nest bed with a removable inner cushion covers both possibilities.
